The IRS recently issued a warning to taxpayers on two new scams. The first scam involves phone calls and voicemails claiming that taxes under your social security number are overdue. If not paid, the social security number will be cancelled or suspended. This is a fake. The IRS will not contact you by telephone.
The second scam is a phony letter coming from the Bureau of Tax Enforcement (there is no such agency). The letter threatens an IRS lien or levy because of overdue taxes. Watch for this fake agency. If you do receive an official looking letter from IRS, let your tax accountant look at it to verify that it is legitimate.
