It is always interesting to see what the non-farm big city papers say about agriculture. In a recent article by Michael Hiltzik, the LA Times said that “Rich farmers, not mom-and-pop farms,” will be the big winners in Trump’s $28 billion tariff bailout. To cover farm losses Trump issued a $12 billion farm bailout last year and recently another $16 billion. He reported that most of the money did not go to small holdings that account for 89 percent of American farms, but to large industrialized operations. He said that most of the money went to operations that are already “major beneficiaries of federal crop support programs that steer billions in subsidies and low-price crop insurance – including insurance that already covers some of their losses from the trade war." He said that the biggest payments go to those “who need them least.”
That is what people that read the Times are hearing about agriculture.
